Back to the Parish:
Transitioning from the Superintendency Well
North Canton, Ohio

Session #1of 2 - May 11 (3:00 p.m.) - May 13 (1:00 p.m.), 2008
Session #2 of 2 - August 27 (1:00 p.m. - August 28 (1:00 p.m.), 2008

DESCRIPTION

Session #1 will begin with looking at the process of starting a new appointment well (utilizing Making a Good Move by Michael Coyner).  This section will include such topics as: preparing for the transition; discerning the appropriate pace of ministry with the new congregation; having a good "first Sunday"; looking at the difference in start strategy by size of congregation; developing a strategy for ministerial leadership in the first few weeks and months; and designing a plan for spiritual formation and self-care at the time of transition from the stress of the role of District Superintendent.  This session will also focus on developing a solid strategy for leadership development as foundational for congregational development (based on Direct Hit by Paul Borden) including a prayer team, a vision team, and a leadership team.  This strategy will also include developing the pastoral role of creating urgency for outreach, as well as preaching that connection with God's mission for the congregation.  This session will also include time and discussion around processing and decompressing from the superintendency, as well as spiritual renewal.

Session #2 will begin with an update on how the transition is going for each participant, allowing time for reflection and group learning from the issues identified from that discussion.  There will also be an opportunity to look more closely at the dynamics of transition in this change of appointment from the superintendency to the local parish (from Managing Transitions by William Bridges) and the place of each congregation in its congregational life cycle and how to be helpful in its development or redevelopment.

LEADERS

Dr. Doug Anderson is executive director of the Bishop Rueben Job Center for leadership  Development at Dakota Wesleyan University.  He was a district superintendent and pastor of several growing churches of different sizes in the United Methodist Church.  He has led a variety of practical church seminars and consultations for over 20 years.  He is a member of the Academy for Spiritual Formation of the Upper Room.  He has taught at the United Methodist School of Congregational Development for the last 3 years - and will be teaching a ministry track again this year in Grand Rapids, Michigan.  He is the co-author with Bishop Michael Coyner of the award winning book The Race to Reach Out.  And best of all, his seminars are energetic, effective and fun.
